South African High Court has ordered that Janusz Walus who killed Chris Hani in 1993, be released from prison.
Chief Justice Ray Zondo said, in his ruling, that Walus had nearly plunged South Africa into a civil war after carrying out a “cold-blooded murder”.
Walus, a Polish national, killed Hani as means to prevent South Africa’s transition from white-minority rule to democratic rule. His South African citizenship was revoked in 2017 and some have called for him to be deported.
In Poland, large banners portraying Walus were displayed around football stadiums during 2020, as polish nationals demanded his release.
Chris Hani was the leader of the South African Communist Party (SACP) and a senior member of the military wing of the African National Congress (ANC).
